چکیده

Forest harvesting is an important, ongoing disturbance that affects the composition, structure, and ecological function of the majority of the world’s forests. However, few studies have examined the interaction between land-use conversion and harvesting. We utilize a unique, spatially explicit database of all cutting events (n > 13,000) and land-cover conversions for Massachusetts over the past 20 years to characterize the interactions between land-use conversion and harvesting, and their relationship to physical, social, and economic factors. We examined three key variables: the proportion of forest harvested within an ecoregion (%), the mean harvest intensity (m ha ), and the mean harvest event area (ha). The mean harvest intensity (43 m ha ), mean harvest area (15 ha), and average species composition of harvests were remarkably constant over time. However, the proportion of forest harvested varied widely across the state, ranging from 0.01 to 1.48% annually. Harvesting activity ceases near the far outer suburbs of major metropolitan areas, as well as along the coast. There is a strong negative correlation (r = 0.89) between the proportion of forest lost to land-use conversion and the proportion of forest harvested. CART analysis shows that road density is the most important overall predictor of probability of forest harvest, with median house price also an important predictor. Harvest intensity, in contrast, appears related to ownership type, with state-owned lands having more intensive harvests (53 m ha ). Our results suggest that current forest management regimes are determined largely by the economic influence of nearby urban centers. # 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effect of land use and discharge changes on the coefficients of suspended sediment rating curve in Zagros forest areas

Extended abstract   1- Introduction   The forests of the Zagros vegetation area cover about six million hectares (40%) of Iran's forest area, which is dominated by oak species. These forests are exposed to a number of threats, including land use change, deforestation, over grazing, deliberate and unintentional fires, pest and disease attacks, and climate change. Although accurate and timely...

The influence of land use and climate change on forest biomass and composition in Massachusetts, USA.

Land use and climate change have complex and interacting effects on naturally dynamic forest landscapes. To anticipate and adapt to these changes, it is necessary to understand their individual and aggregate impacts on forest growth and composition. We conducted a simulation experiment to evaluate regional forest change in Massachusetts, USA over the next 50 years (2010-2060). Our objective was...

In order to optimize the planning and management of natural resources and the environment, it is essential to know the status of land cover changes over the past decades. Modeling land cover change can provide valuable information for better understanding of this process, determining of effective factors and forecasting of regions subject to change. This study aimed to determine and simulate th...

Changes in Gross Primary Production (GPP) over the Past Two Decades Due to Land Use Conversion in a Tourism City

Understanding the changes in gross primary production (GPP), which is the total carbon fixation by terrestrial ecosystems through vegetation photosynthesis, due to land use conversion in a tourism city is important for carbon cycle studies. Satellite data from Landsat 5, Landsat 7 and Landsat 8 and meteorological data are used to calculate annual GPP for 1995, 2003 and 2014, respectively, using...
